The Los Rápidos Channel is one of the most stunning natural waterways in southern Quintana Roo. It is a narrow channel of crystal-clear turquoise water connecting Bacalar Lagoon with Xul-Há Lagoon. Its steady, gentle flow creates a natural lazy river where you can peacefully float with a life jacket or kayak through pristine mangroves.
The channel banks shelter ancient colonies of living stromatolites, fragile biological structures essential to the lagoon’s ecosystem and colors. Below you will find the best ways to visit (by road or via a lagoon boat expedition) along with essential tips for a responsible visit.

These views make clear that this is not a white-water river: they show a narrow crystal-clear channel within the Bacalar and Xul-Há lagoon system.

What Los Rápidos Bacalar really is
“Los Rápidos” is also the name of the lagoon club and restaurant at the best-known visitor access. The natural feature is the Los Rápidos Channel, a narrow passage between the Xul-Há system and Bacalar Lagoon.
How do you get to Los Rápidos? There are two ways
Across the lagoon: boat or sailboat tour
Boat tours leave from Bacalar, cross the Lagoon of Seven Colors and reach the Los Rápidos Channel by water. This option visits the channel as part of a broader lagoon route.
By road: to the Lagoon Club and restaurant
You can also drive to the Los Rápidos Lagoon Club. It is a lagoon club, restaurant and visitor access to the channel; its admission, dining, hours and rules are separate from boat tours.
They are not white-water rapids
There are no waterfalls or extreme descents. The narrow channel creates a natural, steady and usually gentle current whose strength can vary with water conditions.
Visitor access with a restaurant
The access known as Los Rápidos operates as a lagoon club with a restaurant, rest areas and equipment rental. It is not a town or a separate river.
The stromatolites are alive
The formations along the shore are not rocks to sit on. They are fragile living microbial structures: never touch, step on or lean against them.
