Bacalar: trade the sea for the Lagoon of Seven Colors
Bacalar works beautifully after Mahahual because the experience changes completely: pontoon or sailboat trips, kayaking or paddleboarding, the Pirates’ Channel, cenotes and time in town. From Mahahual, allow roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by car, depending on weather, traffic and where you leave from. Without a car, check schedules ahead of time: public transport usually takes longer and runs less often.

What is Bacalar Lagoon, and why is there no sargassum?
Bacalar is not a beach or an open sea bay: it is an inland freshwater lagoon fed by cenotes and underground currents. That is why it does not receive the marine sargassum that reaches many Mexican Caribbean beaches from the Atlantic. Water clarity and blue tones can still change with rain, wind, sediment and the lagoon’s environmental conditions; a sargassum-free trip does not mean the water looks identical every day.
Four ways to experience Bacalar
Choose one or two experiences and leave room to enjoy the lagoon at an easy pace.

Sunset sailboat
For a quieter experience, following the wind and the best light on the lagoon.
Kayak or paddleboard
An active option for exploring the shoreline early, when the water is often calmer.
