The Pirates Channel is the most photographed and historically rich location in Bacalar. It connects the lagoon to the Río Hondo and served as the invasion route for British buccaneers in the 18th century. The concrete "Pirate Ship": the real story
Contrary to popular belief, the famous ship-shaped structure rising from the water is not an authentic sunken 18th-century galleon. It is a reinforced concrete foundation started in the 1960s and 70s as an ambitious floating restaurant and viewpoint that was never finished. Over decades of weathering and murals, it became the iconic visual landmark of Bacalar.
Swimming conditions: a shallow natural pool
The channel features a bright white calcium carbonate sand floor and crystal-clear, pastel turquoise waters. Depth ranges between 50 cm and 1.20 meters (knee to waist deep), allowing you to comfortably wade through the water across hundreds of meters.
Strict environmental rules: protecting the lagoon
Official regulation in effectFor years, visitors covered themselves in sulfur-rich sediment as a natural exfoliating treatment ("Mayan mud bath"). Today, this practice is banned by environmental authorities in Quintana Roo:
- 1No rubbing mud or sand on your skin: disturbing sediments alters the water mineral balance and harms neighboring stromatolites.
- 2No chemical sunscreens or bug sprays: only UV-protective swim shirts (rashguards) are permitted in the water.
- 3Wednesday motorboat ban: motorized watercraft are not allowed on Wednesdays to grant the lagoon a day of ecological recovery.
How do you get to the Pirates Channel?
There is no road access or walking trail. It can only be reached by water.
By boat or pontoon tour (Recommended)
